Designing the MVP mobile experience for a smart hearing device

Soundfr is building a smart device that helps people with hearing loss stay aware of conversations and important sounds. While the long-term vision includes multiple features, this MVP focused on one essential capability — real-time speech-to-text transcription through the companion app.

The project came with an unusual challenge. The product vision was much bigger than what could realistically be built at this stage, so instead of designing the full experience, we focused on launching a single feature that could already deliver value to users.

I joined the project with a rough prototype and three days to turn it into a development-ready MVP.

From a rough idea to a product people can actually use

The initial concept explained what the feature should do, but not how people would actually use it. I redesigned the experience from the ground up, defining navigation, screen hierarchy, interactions, recording states, and everything needed to make the feature feel like a complete product rather than just a prototype.

Along the way, I also proposed an archive system, allowing users to organise and manage their recordings instead of keeping them in one endless list.

Designing for people who experience interfaces differently

People with hearing loss rely on visual information in ways most users never have to think about. That affected every design decision. Instead of adding more functionality, I focused on making every interaction obvious. The interface provides continuous visual feedback while recording, uses predictable interactions, and removes anything that could distract users from the primary task.

The result is an experience that feels calm, focused and easy to trust.

One feature. A complete experience.

Although the MVP includes only one core capability, it still needed to feel like a real product. The experience guides users from device setup to live transcription, saving recordings, and finding them later through the archive, without unnecessary steps or complicated navigation. The goal wasn't to design more screens. It was to make the first version feel complete.

Building a foundation instead of just shipping screens

Working under a three-day deadline meant every design decision had to be intentional. Alongside the interface, I built a reusable component library, designed interaction states and edge cases, and prepared everything for developer handoff.

The MVP is now live on both iOS and Android.

A product deserves a website that explains it

Before designing the companion app, I also redesigned Soundfr's marketing website.
The previous website didn't clearly communicate what the product was or what problem it solved. Many visitors struggled to understand what Soundfr actually offered, making it difficult to build trust with both potential customers and investors.
I restructured the content, clarified the messaging, and created a cleaner experience that explains the product before asking people to believe in it.
